If renting your own inventory isn’t your thing, don’t worry, Cloud Rental has you covered. Multiple inventory participants upload their rebates list behind the scenes so a comprehensive catalog is ready to go anytime. We match the most valuable rebates against your term’s list, producing the lowest price and widest selection. You don’t see vendor names, and we don’t play games with our vendors. The prices they submit win or lose based on value, and there is no further negotiation against each other at the end of the semester. Because of this, you can be sure you’re getting their best offer and lowest pricing now.

If you’re not already renting digitally through your primary POS, we have you covered. Each book on your list which is available digitally, can be rented digitally right at the rental kiosk, or online. Students receive an email with access information immediately upon checkout, and you earn your commission from the digital provider you’ve selected on campus.
TITLE LIST MANAGEMENT
You have full control over the rental lists you make available to students and the types of items on that list. Rental only? Items for rent and sale? New? Used? Both? Manage a single list at a time, or run multiple lists simultaneously; each with its own custom due date, rental return date, and array of items and options. Add courses and sections to your lists for extended search capabilities. Make lists active or deactivate them at any time.
From flat pricing across consignment titles, to rebate priced titles, to determining your own price for the books you own, prices are managed within the platform for your convenience. FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE RENTAL AGREEMENT
It may sound simple – and it is! Of course you can customize your rental agreement to explain return and refund procedures, and strike the right tone and requirements for your students on campus to return books on time or be responsible if they do not.
Credit cards, financial aid, cash or other forms of tender – you can reach every student with Cloud Rental. Non credit card forms of payment are still secured by a a credit card against non-returned books, but using our alternate payment function, any form of tender can be used.

Automated buyouts for non-returns is key to ensuring inventory gets back on time, and recovering value for you or your partners if not. These processes are automated with Cloud Rental.
SALES TAX COLLECTION AND MANAGEMENT
Death and taxes? OK! Let’s just talk about taxes. Yes, that’s covered too. Tax rates are set per store, based on locality. Whether this is for your own rentals, or the vendor who is backing your rentals, the ability to properly collect and remit taxes matters. Boring? Yep. Required? Also, yes.
Want to give your students peace of mind? Enter: Rent Plus. This allows students to pay an up front fee in exchange for a lower buyout in the event of excessive damage or loss. Renting requires peace of mind that if the property becomes damaged, there is a thoughtful outcome that isn’t highly negative for the student. You choose whether or not Rent Plus will be offered on your campus. If you do offer it, you can confidently encourage students to rent and be sure their experience will be a good one, even in the event something bad happens to their books.
CUSTOMER INFORMATION COLLECTION
Email, name, student ID, phone number… everything out side of email, which is required for communication, is up to you. Configure customer information requirements within your store settings to collect as little or as much as you need. Outside of email, most stores collect name and phone number, and in some cases, student ID.
Communication is of the keys to rental success. Students face a variety of options at the beginning of the semester. Helping them sort out the options they picked as classes wrap up matters. Turns out, it matters a lot. Email reminders go out to students prior to the rental return date at 30, 10, 5, and 0 days. These emails come as if from you, maintaining your brand and influence the entire time. And communication is more than just nagging for returns. Students receive an emailed receipt, confirmation of any change in order, refunds, etc. Communication is key, and Cloud Rental delivers.
CUSTOMER ACCOUNT INFORMATION
For every customer you have billing history, order history, communication history, ability to add store notes to any account, etc. Customer accounts enable you to effectively serve your students over their entire college career.
Managing rentals is a thing all in itself, but our platform does the heavy lifting. Here’s a brief summary of what you’ll do within order management: refund rentals if returned within your refund window, allow the student to purchase the rental if they elect to keep the book forever (not applicable with some consignment rental titles), charge students custom amounts for either of the above, whether in absolute dollars or percent, make a condition switch (new to used or used to new), perform a manual order status change, print (re-print) a receipt, receive rental at the end of the term, and see the accounting audit trail.
EMPLOYEE USER ROLES AND PRIVILEGES – TEAM MANAGEMENT
Not all employees need or should have access to all information. Set up your own users, from admins who see it all, to cashiers who can perform all but a few key functions, to back office help that is limited to seeing reports and performing rental returns. You’ll find the flexibility to configure employee settings to fit your needs.
Whether tracking rental for yourself, or giving a partner the ability to see activity on your campus, reporting with rental matters because someone owns the inventory and needs to accurately account for it. Every characteristic about the book is tracked (ISBN, title, condition at time of rental) including all information relative to the transaction itself all the way through the closing of the rental through a successful return, buyout, or loss. Reports can be run by date range and across any title list.
RECEIVING AND RETAINING THE BOOKS YOU’LL USE NEXT TERM
Once books are returned by students it’s your choice to keep any you need for subsequent terms. Simply upload your latest want list to see matches indicating the books you should keep, rather than turning back to the vendor. This makes rental efficient. Why ship books off campus if you’ll turn right back around and order them again? Why keep books you don’t need? This is all sorted out at the end of the semester through an intuitive returns and retention process. You can even create custom messages for employees like “we’re keeping this title for sure – place on the purple shelf.” Because we all have a purple shelf, somewhere.
DEPLOYING RENTAL IN-STORE
Sidewalk has partnered with Square to bring state of the art rental stands to market. These compact stands are designed to sit beside your registers and facilitate rental transactions as part of checkout. This makes deploying rental fast, and massively efficient. If you’re not in rental season, you can put the small stands in the back room to free up counter space, and retrieve and deploy again at any time.
DEPLOYING RENTAL ONLINE
Your students can rent books online or in-store. Deploying online is a cinch. And you can configure your site to accept orders for in-store pickup only, shipped to students only, or both. You can also configure your online store to take rental reservations in advance. In all cases, orders are only charged when shipped or picked up, keeping your transactions tight and accurate.
DEPLOYING RENTAL THROUGH HERO
For stores who are using Hero and rental together, good for you! The online rental interface can link directly to Hero, establishing your store’s rental price as the primary option in the price comparison panel, and taking students right to your store’s rental cart. This puts you in a position to win even more transactions.
THE FUNDS FLOW – GET PAID DAILY
In the past, Sidewalk used to collect and remit funds to rental partner stores, but not more. Your store’s own account is tied to the Square credit card processor which means all funds which you transact in store are received into your own account next business day. This moves Sidewalk away from the financial transaction itself, so we can focus on the software and customer experience, and keep cash flows as strong as possible in your store.
